Digital Treadmill

Like many of you, I make a living in this crazy, fast paced world of digital media. Some of us create content, others count those who consume it. Some of us build algorithms, others decipher how they work. We are ubiquitously mobile, use aggregators to aggregate our aggregators and read snapshots of “news” from disparate sources that weren’t around five years ago, or even more accurately, five years ago would have been considered “opinion”.

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in his famously coined “Moore’s Law” talked about the speed of computing, which, depending on which side you believe, “we” (meaning the uber technology gurus) either have kept up with or far surpassed the pace predicted.. Good for us. However, I want to know what the parallel law is for the human brain? How do we train our brain to keep up with the myriad status updates, tweets, LinkedIn requests, blog RSS feeds, text messages, and so on, and so on and so on.

Even though i’m an early adopter of technology and platforms, why do I have this constant worry of being left behind? Think about it, I read about and live this space all day long! I consult on it, talk about it, and help clients use it to stay in touch with their costumers. I am a P1 consumer of digital media, and somehow everyday I wake up and think “Now where the HELL did that come from?

I’m thinking we need to name this condition, this feeling of being on a digital treadmill that keeps moving faster, and faster, and faster and faster… Many of us hamsters can’t get off the thing, or we’d be out of jobs and on the streets. It’s either my advancing age (42, ANCIENT in this space) or my decreasing patience, but I feel like it’s moving faster than it ever has before. Could it be the Twitter effect? Fast messages, shortened links, tweets, retweets, co-tweets, etc. All I know is I’m like Pavlov’s dog when the Tweet Deck sound goes off – the pressure meter in my brain is like “Oh no! What happened and how do I stay ahead of it?” It’s irritweeting. (Hey wait – I need to buy that url! ) See?? That’s what happens! We need a name. Besides “overload”. Anyone? Bueller?

I’m signing off now. Until tomorrow… (Or later, via text , mobile Facebook/Twitter, Foursquare, Skype, Facetime, LinkedIn, Yammer… etc.

It’s madness, I tell you.
